Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, the founder of the New Kadampa Tradition - International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU), appointed Gen-la Kelsang Khyenrab as the deputy Spiritual Director in early 2007. On Venerable Geshe-la's retirement in August 2009, Gen-la Khyenrab assumed the role of General Spiritual Director of the NKT-IKBU.

Gen-la Khyenrab has been practising Kadampa Buddhism since the early 1980s. With Geshe Kelsang's blessing Gen-la Khyenrab established Tara Centre, a flourishing Buddhist college in Derbyshire that now holds the annual United Kingdom Dharma Celebration (UKDC).

At Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's request, Gen-la Khyenrab became the Resident Teacher at Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre (MKMC) in 2007. Manjushri KMC, situated in Ulverston, Cumbria, is the mother Centre for all New Kadampa Tradition Centres throughout the world. It is the location of the annual Spring and Summer Festivals.
